TEAS 7 Chemistry Cheat Sheet: Acids, Bases & Redox Reactions
๐Ÿ’ก Direct Summary: What Chemistry concepts are tested on the TEAS 7 Science section?

The TEAS 7 Science section tests Chemistry principles including atomic structure, chemical reactions, state changes, solutions, pH scale (Acids and Bases), and Oxidation-Reduction (Redox) reactions.

The ATI TEAS 7 Science section expanded chemical reactions and physical science concepts significantly compared to TEAS 6. Among these, questions on pH, buffer solutions, acids, bases, and redox reactions are guaranteed points if you know the basic formulas.

Acids vs. Bases & The pH Scale Breakdown

  • Acids: Have a pH < 7. Donate hydrogen ions (H+) in solution. Taste sour and turn blue litmus paper red. (Examples: Stomach HCl, Vinegar).
  • Bases (Alkaline): Have a pH > 7. Accept hydrogen ions (or produce OH- hydroxide ions). Taste bitter, feel slippery, and turn red litmus paper blue. (Examples: Bleach, Ammonia).
  • Neutral: pH = 7.0 (Pure water).
  • Logarithmic Scale: Each step on the pH scale represents a 10x change in H+ concentration. A solution of pH 4 is 100 times more acidic than a solution of pH 6!
๐Ÿงช Mnemonic for Redox Reactions: "OIL RIG"

โ€ข OIL: Oxidation Is Loss of electrons.
โ€ข RIG: Reduction Is Gain of electrons.
An oxidizing agent causes another substance to lose electrons and is itself reduced!
