HESI A2 Registration & Test Day Logistics

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID and your exact Elsevier testing credentials. Do not bring calculators, scratch paper, or outside electronics, as everything required is provided digitally or at the testing center.
The absolute worst way to start your HESI A2 exam is by getting turned away at the door because you registered improperly or forgot your ID.
Unlike other standardized tests with centralized portals, the HESI A2 registration process is notoriously fragmented. Because different nursing programs require different sub-sections of the test, Elsevier (the company that makes the HESI) relies on schools and testing centers to manage the specifics. It's confusing, but we're going to break it down step-by-step.
📋 From the Tutor's Desk
Do not guess which test sections you need to take. Some schools require 5 sections, others require 8. Some require Physics, most don't. Students often fail because they wasted 3 weeks studying Physics, only to realize their target school didn't even require it. Get your school's specific course requirements in writing before you even open a textbook.
Step 1: Determine Your Path
There are two ways you will take the HESI A2, and your school dictates which path you take:
- Path A: On-Campus Testing. Your school has a testing center and administers the exam themselves. They will give you a specific Department ID to use during registration.
- Path B: Prometric Testing Center. Your school outsources the exam to Prometric. You will take the exam at a third-party testing facility.
Step 2: Create an Elsevier Evolve Account
Regardless of where you test, you must create an account with Elsevier. Go to the Evolve Elsevier website, click "I'm a Student," and select "Register for Distance Testing" if you are using Prometric, or "HESI Student Access" if taking it on campus. Create your username and password—you will need these on test day to actually log into the exam.
What to Bring on Test Day
✅ REQUIRED
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver's License, Passport)
- Elsevier Evolve Username and Password
- Registration confirmation email (printed or on phone)
❌ BANNED
- Cell phones, smartwatches, electronics
- Calculators (one is provided on screen)
- Scratch paper (they will provide a whiteboard and marker)
- Bags, purses, heavy coats (lockers are provided)
The Testing Environment
If testing at Prometric, expect airport-level security. You will be wanded with a metal detector, asked to turn out your pockets, and monitored via camera for the entirety of the 4-hour exam. You are allowed to take bathroom breaks, but the clock will not stop.
You can choose the order in which you take the exam sections. Most successful students tackle their hardest subject first while their brain is fresh, leaving easier subjects (like Vocabulary) for the end when fatigue sets in.
To prepare for test day conditions, we highly recommend taking a full-length, timed free HESI A2 practice quiz without any distractions.
