HESI A2 Score Requirements by Nursing School (2026)
By Priya Sharma, M.S. Β· Updated April 11, 2026
Most competitive nursing programs require a minimum composite score of 75% to 80%. However, specific sections like Anatomy and Math may have their own independent cutoff requirements of 80% or higher.
"What HESI score do I need?" is the most common question we get from nursing applicants. The answer depends entirely on your school β and some schools have section-specific minimums that are even harder to hit than the composite. Here's the most comprehensive guide available.
How HESI A2 Scoring Works
Unlike the TEAS (which uses weighted scoring), the HESI A2 is straightforward:
"Competitive" and "Minimum Required" are two entirely different things. A program's website might state that a 75% on the HESI is the minimum requirement. However, I've coached students applying to competitive Texas programs where the *actual* average accepted score was an 89%. Aiming for the website's minimum is often a formula for getting waitlisted. Call admissions and ask for the *average* accepted score.
- Each section is scored 0β100% independently
- Your composite score is the simple average of all sections your school requires
- Many schools require individual section minimums (e.g., 75% in each section) in addition to a composite minimum
- Scores are valid for 1β2 years depending on the school
