Nursing school application tips

Getting a strong TEAS 7 score is essential — but it's only one piece of a competitive nursing school application. Admissions committees look at the whole picture.

1. Know Your Program's Requirements

Not all nursing programs weight application components the same way. Research each program's minimum TEAS score, GPA requirements, and what average scores look like for accepted students. Apply to programs at multiple selectivity levels.

2. Maximize Your Science GPA

Nursing programs look closely at prerequisite science grades — Anatomy & Physiology I & II, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Statistics. Aim for B or higher in all sciences. If your science GPA is below 3.0, consider retaking a course before applying.

3. Write a Personal Statement That's Actually Personal

Most applicants waste this with generic statements. Stand out by being specific: describe a particular moment that led you to nursing, connect your experience to nursing skills, and explain why this specific program fits your goals. Keep it 500–700 words.

4. Choose References Strategically

Best references come from science faculty who taught you, clinical supervisors from healthcare experience, or healthcare managers from relevant work. Give each writer 6 weeks of lead time and a summary of your goals.

5. Build Clinical Experience

Even 50–100 hours of documented clinical experience sets you apart. Options include hospital volunteering, medical scribing, CNA certification, or community health work.

6. Your TEAS Score Target

Most competitive BSN programs want 70%+ composite. Top programs expect 80%+. Take the TEAS early enough to allow a retake if needed — and use your target program's average score, not the minimum, as your goal.
