What algebra is on the TEAS 7?

TEAS 7 Algebra requires solving for unknown variables, isolating X, evaluating absolute values, and setting up equations from word problems. Mastering linear inequalities is also essential for scoring well on the math section.

For many nursing students, the word "algebra" triggers high school flashbacks. But TEAS 7 algebra is incredibly predictable, and you only need three core skills to master it.

You aren't going to be factoring complex polynomials or graphing parabolas. TEAS algebra is almost entirely linear equations with one variable. That means "solving for X". If you can balance a seesaw, you can balance an algebraic equation.

📋 From the Tutor's Desk

The number one mistake I see students make isn't mathematical—it's organizational. When solving for X, students try to do two steps in their head at once, drop a negative sign, and end up with the wrong answer. Write down every single line. I promise it takes less time to write it down than it does to stare at the screen confused.

Rule #1: The Golden Rule of Algebra

An equation is a scale. The equals sign (=) is the balance point. Whatever you do to one side of the equation, you MUST do exact the same thing to the other side.

If you subtract 5 from the left side, you must subtract 5 from the right side. If you divide the left side by 2, you must divide the right side by 2. This is the only rule that matters.

Rule #2: Inverse Operations (Do the Opposite)

Your goal is to get the variable (usually X) completely alone on one side of the equals sign. To "move" numbers away from X, you use the opposite mathematical operation:

  • If a number is being added to X, you subtract it.
  • If a number is being subtracted from X, you add it.
  • If X is being multiplied by a number (like 4x), you divide by that number.
  • If X is being divided by a number (like x/3), you multiply by that number.
💡 Tutor’s Tip: Deal with addition/subtraction FIRST. Deal with multiplication/division LAST. Work from the outside in.

Step-by-Step Example

Solve for X:     3x + 7 = 22

  1. Goal: Get X alone. Right now, it's multiplied by 3 and has a +7 attached.
  2. Deal with Addition first: The opposite of +7 is -7. Subtract 7 from BOTH sides.
    3x + 7 - 7 = 22 - 7
    3x = 15
  3. Deal with Multiplication next: The 3 is multiplying X. The opposite is division. Divide BOTH sides by 3.
    3x / 3 = 15 / 3
  4. Result:
    X = 5

This simple logic applies to 90% of the algebra on the TEAS 7. To put these skills to work and see real test questions, take our free TEAS practice quiz.

Algebra Basics FAQs

Algebra and data interpretation make up roughly 55% of the math section. Linear equations and solving for X are the foundation.
No. The TEAS 7 does not test quadratic equations (like solving for x^2 + 5x + 6 = 0). You only need to know linear equations.
No, you do not need to graph lines. But you do need to understand how to read charts, graphs, and basic data tables.
The ATI test writers specifically create wrong answer choices based on dropped negative signs. Always double-check your sign flipping.
